Our Teaching Approach

Blue House Nursery & International Preschool pioneered the introduction of the Reggio Emilia approach to early years education in Singapore. We are inspired by the approach’s core principles and offer a fully emergent curriculum fitting of children growing up in todays global environment, fast paced energy and making full use of what we know today of how children best learn and thrive.

The Blue House pedagogy has been developed through years of international experience in the early years industry, and in partnership with some of the worlds most respected minds and bodies.

Our unique approach has become respected amongst parents and fellow educators alike and we host numerous study tours, educational visits and think-tanks within our collaborative and international network.

Our pedagogy is forever evolving with innovation and professional development at our core. In the truest sense of education, there is always more to learn, more to grow from, more to benefit from, and we remain very much at the creative edge of the industry.

We have chosen to develop a programme very much inspired by the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education and the school offers a curriculum that is child centred and teacher framed.

Many people know Reggio Emilia as a beautiful city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. However, for many educators and parents of preschool and primary aged children around the world, Reggio Emilia means so much more. The foundation of this approach to teaching started in Reggio Emilia at the end of the Second World War when many of the schools and their resources had been destroyed. With community support and collaboration a new approach to teaching was created.

Loris Malaguzzi became the inspiration and guiding force behind the educational experiences forever pushing the conventional ideas of education at that time. The basis for the Reggio Emilia philosophy is founded on the principles of community, responsibility, and respect through a supportive and enriching environment. These principles remain an integral part of the daily lives of the school community. The Reggio Emilia approach to teaching inspires educators across the world, with schools like Blue House focusing on key elements.

  • Children must be able to learn through hands on experiences using all of their senses
  • Children learn best through a project based approach
  • Children are facilitated and guided by passionate and experienced staff.
  • Children must be encouraged and allowed to foster relationships with other children.
  • Children must feel safe and be given ample opportunities to express themselves

At Blue House we fully understand and respect that the teaching approach is undeniably entwined in the culture of the town of Reggio Emilia. Our approach to teaching is wholeheartedly inspired by these principles within the cultural context of this beautiful country of Singapore.
